Alas, another Teddy Bear Picnic is upon us. A picnic with teddy bears?
Yep. Every December, Bakersfield City Schools has an annual fundraiser to bring in money for innovative teacher grants. The idea is to put a themed basket together with a teddy as a centerpiece. In previous years, I arranged a Bakersfield Jam Basketball Team basket (complete with autographed mini-basketball by the guys), a Barry Manilow accessorized basket, called "Have a Very, Beary Christmas", and this year, it's autographed books. Combining donated books from the Kiwanis Club of Kern and generous writers from The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, I managed to create, for our Noble School contribution, a sweet lil purply-poo bear surrounded by books and whimsical doo-dads: cotton candy body spray, flavored lip balms, a jewelry holder, a giant purple pen, a package of Smencils (scented pencils-- a huge favorite with the students at our school this year), a water bottle with groovy peace sign holder, best friends necklace, showy head dress, Tinker Bell sunglasses, sparkly-fuzzy 3-piece journal set, and a Dora the Explorer cloth book bag. Braving the mobs on Black Friday, I happily bounced around the Valley Plaza mall finding various items for my basket.
The wide variety of themed baskets is always a joy to oogle over, and come December 8th, my sister, Jena, and I will be at the brunch bidding on our favorites.
Want to donate a basket to our district? Or maybe you'd like to just show up, eat, and bid on your favorite creations. Either way, go HERE for details. Hope to see you there! :-)
